MARCA is a display stencil typeface inspired by the ornate and handcrafted look of eighteenth century wine labels and street signage stencils. I wanted to challenge myself to create a serif and develop a workflow for designing type that worked for me.
My process involved a lot of researching from different books available from my local libraries, trying to find as many stencils as I could, before narrowing down and honing in on the details that I wanted to implement, as well as the use cases for the typeface. One of my hopes was that the final typeface would have the potential to be expanded to have a text and sans-serif companion further down the line.
